Earn While You Learn
The Earn While You Learn program provides high school students leadership and learning opportunities while earning money for their future education through community service.

Students in 9th through 12th grade may apply to become a Mayor and 8th grade students may apply to be Assistant Mayors.  Both play a leadership role in the Nettie Bailey Student Achievement program, where students are divided into various city groups.  Each city is led by a Mayor and they can pick the name of their city, such as Denver or Los Angeles. Each high school student signs a contract agreeing to comply with expectations and responsibilities. Among the expectations is to participate in community service opportunities, comply with the “Zero Tolerance” policy for violence and substance abuse, attend school regularly, and complete assigned homework assignments. Failure to meet expectations in the contract agreement may result in financial penalties or program dismissal.

During their tenure in the EWYL program, students earn a small stipend. Breakthrough contributes $10 per student each week of service. In addition, students are encouraged to find “investors” to contribute to the program fund. These investors may be family members, friends, local community members and broader community members. This promotes awareness of the students’ activities and promotes investment in young people.

Students receive 60% of the stipend amount for immediate use on a bi-weekly basis. Most are responsible for meeting their own immediate needs such as food, transportation and clothes. They may use their stipend for these purposes. The remaining 40% is deposited to an internal savings fund intended to meet their future educational needs upon high school graduation.
